“Courtney’s War” is a part of Wilbur Smith’s seventeen-book series called “The Courtney Novels”, which have been published over the course of the last six decades. These novels can be split into three parts, and “Courtney’s War” is part of the third installment of novels.

This novel follows the story of lovers Saffron Courtney and Gerhard von Meerbach as they brave the evils of the Second World War. Smith beautifully crafts both characters from the first sentence of the book, allowing readers to get a perfect picture of these two lovers. Readers can not only picture the sheer physical beauty of both characters, but can also appreciate the individual, strong-willed personalities each possess.

Although the novel begins by describing the flawless romance between these gorgeous characters, as well as the beauty of the city itself, tragedy and heartache are sure to follow, given the time period this novel is set in. By page six, the mood already turns a bit darker and conversation turns to the war.

Although this sample is only just a tiny nibble of the beginning of this masterful work of historical fiction, I sensel that this story, and most certainly these characters, will leave an unforgettable impression on readers.
