This book has an interesting opening chapter, and I don’t think has a reader needs to even care about beauty pageants to understand the author’s dedication to a goal and the heartache of losing. The writing style is like a one-on-one conversation with a friendly person in a Bible study class. Dr. Turner Bell is honest about how disappointing moments in life can start as early as when moms occasionally say the wrong things to their kids.

The author’s path to becoming Miss America is a familiar one to anyone who has ever participated in a pageant. There are contestants who enter year after year, like the author, and who also move around and enter preliminary contests for different cities and regions. This book does a fairly good job of conveying that work-the-circuit approach to pageants. This might help newcomers understand that chances of winning could be slim on the very first time around. The pageant process and her prayers for guidance are the main part of the book. However, I think the author's attainment of veterinary school is the most impressive.

Church-going readers who are truly searching for what they want in life or some suggestions on how to pull themselves out of a sense of failure or sadness, might find the occasional sidebar questions helpful. They are very basic questions.
