Perfectly flawed, strong female characters within a mythical retelling? Say no more! This is my favorite way to relearn mythology as a 37-year-old adult. As a child, and young teen, I was completely stubborn against reading mythology texts in school. Discovering beautiful, poetic retellings in adulthood has been one of the most enjoyable parts of getting older. The writing style here is dry yet literary, poetic yet blunt and honest. My morbid curiosity was peaked right on the first page with discussions of infants lying at the bottom of Ceadas. Mythology is so heavily told through male eyes, that books like this one and (of course) Madeline Miller's Circe are important, as they give us a fresh perspective on ancient tales. Casati touches all five sense with her lush descriptions — so much so that I feel like I'm standing right next to Clytemnestra, experiencing everything alongside her.
