Clytemnestra by Costanza Casati is a thrilling and heartbreaking telling of one of the most infamous events in mythology. As a woman, in the traditional retellings she is hardly given more than a passing mention as Helen of Troy's sister, and it is unflattering to say the least. However, Costanza Casati turns what we think we know about the Trojan War and Clytemnestra on its head in this book. She gives Clytemnestra agency and strength, and more than a little tragedy. So obviously I was hooked from the start. We get to see Clytemnestra grow from a headstrong young girl, to a measured young woman, to a powerful and deadly queen. Is she perfect? No. But after reading this book I feel that all of the 'ugliness' ascribed to her by men throughout time is just jealousy and fear because if she was given a chance she could have ruled the entirety of Greece. A must read!
