Along the banks of the Eurotas River, two sisters couldn’t be more different. Clytemnestra is as fierce as her father’s warriors; a girl who will stand up for her family and wants to follow along with her brothers and the king (her father) wherever he goes. Then there’s Helen of Sparta, a beauty beyond compare, lover of all things, smart, yet isn’t a warrior like her sister.

I love how the author has introduced us to these characters, this family, and brought them to life. Sharing their daily experiences gives them more depth.

When a foreign king comes to visit, the girls all assume that he’s there for Helen. But Clytemnestra secretly wonders “why not me?”. Clytemnestra is pulled aside by their mother and told a story, a ritual on mating, and she wonders if Helen was given the same speech. When Helen is seated next to the king, it seems as if she is meant for him, but he keeps his gaze on Clytemnestra.
I definitely want to continue reading, I’m intrigued. Where will the author take us? What will happen between the king and Clytemnestra?
