To start, I have not read the first book in this series, The Tattooist of Auschwitz, and I was afraid I'd be missing something but this one reads as a solid stand alone. Cilka's Journey is devastating and offers a unique look into a not often talked about time period.

Cilka's Journey is a historical fiction based on a real girl. The author's painstaking research makes this girl's life come alive.

Cilka was a young Jewish girl from Czechoslovakia who was sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau. She was forced into sexual relations with SS officials and had to do awful things in the camp to survive. When the Soviets liberated the camp, she was sent to the Vorkuta gulag as a prisoner for "sleeping with the enemy."

The story that unfolds is one of unfathomable pain and suffering but also courage and kindness that emerged in such a dark world. This is a must read.
