I absolutely loved this story. I will share with you that I finished this story while running the streets of Frankfurt Germany. And if you haven’t been to Europe, there are these small stumble stones in the sidewalks of where former Jewish families lived (I run across Anne Frank’s often)— anyways it was just an amazing tid bit that reminds me how real this time was and how heart breaking.
All the history in this novel is felt through Heather’s dedicated research. I felt so attached to Cilka, just as I did Lale. Her strength and courage made for a great story. Cilka knew what she had to do to survive, even if those dark times were heavy on her shoulders, even if it was “against” the rules- if she felt it was right, she acted! I was very happy that she opened up a bit (won’t say anything more on that) I also enjoyed the flipping from present to past within a novel and how Heather tied in certain events from her first novel into this one. WII stories are always a win for me!!
