I only recently starting getting into historical stories. However, this one has me wanting more.
This is a hauntingly beautifully written book about what happened once World War 2 was over. Its a story I have never even thought about. I had my rose colored glasses on about what happened after the war ended and this book took them off.
People who were accused of war crimes, were sent to another prison. Even those who had to commit those crimes in order to survive. Our main character Cilka was forced to be a guard and she needed to do it in order to survive the camp alive. She was torn about, beaten down and forced to do things just to survive. She never stops thinking about what she did and never stops trying to make up for what she did. She was such a strong woman and a brave woman. I don't know if i would ever be able to survive as she did. This was an absolutely beautiful book about surviving when everything is against you. I can't recommend this enough.
