Heather Morris wrote an excellent book called The Tattooist of Auschwitz and I think the follow up book, Cilka’s Journey, is even better. It is obvious that she has completed extensive research into her characters. The books are considered fictional but they are strongly based on true people who survived the horrors of the prison camp. While The Tattooist focuses on the two main characters, Gita and Lale, their good friend Cilka is introduced and I had wanted to learn more about her. Cilka’s Journey does just that. Her life after Auschwitz was liberated and then her condemnation to serve in a Siberian prison is the subject of Cilka’s Journey.
This book was one of the best books I have read this year. It is heartbreaking but filled with Cilka’s bravery and compassion for the others who suffered along side of her. I found the author’s additional notes at the end of the book enlightening and it brings a closure to Cilka’s Journey.
