I remember reading and loving "The Tattooist of Auschwitz" when it came out. I know as soon as Morris came out with another book that I wanted to read it. My only regret is that I waited almost a year to read this book.
Cilka's story and experiences will break your heart. I will never understand how a young woman who was forced to experience a concentration camp, then had the strength to make it through a gulag. I find it horrifying that someone who was trying to survive and was raped was accused of being a spy. Speaking with my husband about this, he stated it probably happened more often then we would like to think about. Cilka survived three years in Auschwitz and then ten years in a gulag. I really enjoyed reading about Cilka working in the hospital and seeing her inner strength. Cilka was a brave woman and has a strength in her that I will never be able to have.
While this book is more fictional than Morris' other book (She couldn't interview Cilka) that book is based on a real woman who survived one of the worst concentration camps and a gulag! I feel like not enough is truly known about gulags. We spend so much time focusing on the concentration camps, but Stalin and his gulags were also horrors. I feel like Morris did a better job writing this book and I can't wait to see what she writes next!
