Riveting right from the start.
I have an insatiable appetite for any and all books involving World War II. I think it's because I fail to grasp how so much hate could exist in one part of the world. I also read everything I can get my hands on to remind myself of the human suffering. From the first page, this sneak peek captured my attention. The careful use of flashbacks allows the reader to see Cilka's suffering alongside the circumstances that led up to her prison sentence. More needless suffering at the hands of those who thought they were exacting justice.
