Historical Fiction that sends shivers down your spine

Having just visited the Auschwitz exhibit in New York City, this book for me brings to mind all the videos and pictures I saw. I grew up in India and history related to the 1940s were predominantly about the British and India's independence in 1947. It is a reality check for me to realize that the Holocaust was happening at that time too.
