When I first read the first chapters of this book, the whole idea of using a columnist's articles was unique... I became overwhelmed by the sheer number of characters and the jumping back and forth... Didn't know if I could finish it. Then I changed my tactics. I started from the beginning again and read the book slowly. Taking the time to savor it and gradually learn who the characters were.
I am a fast reader and hard for me to do it this way...but taking the time to read it slowly and in several days, I came to know the characters and to love them. Haze's life told in her columns and in the letters/diary interacted with a whole new generation. 50 years of columns brought 50 years of history and reading through these columns, I too was reminded of specific times in history.
Take your time with this book...it's worth reading.
