I absolutely ADORE Ali Hazelwood and her books, this was the fourth book of hers I read. I was very invested in the story, Mallory is in need of money for her family, and her so called rival somehow brings her back to the one thing she hates most. Chess. Painful memories turn into sweet new ones, there were many twists and turns that kept me turning the pages. And talk about a slow burn romance. This book gave me butterflies in my stomach. As much as I loved it, I am a sucker for romance and do wish it had a bit more. Because this book is about two “rivals” I do understand the competitive concept. I guess I was left wanting more. Romantic and humorous, and insanely relatable. Mallory’s inner dialogue is close to perfection. You know when you’re watching a movie, and a character makes a really dumb decision? Like the one in a horror movie who opens the door? This book gave me the infuriating feeling towards both Nate and Mallory, and I think that’s what made this book so real. If you’re ready to swoon and maybe scream even though the characters can’t hear you, this book is for you!
