The characters in the book were quite interesting and complex, with Mallory having a tough family backstory and home life which added depth to her character. I also enjoyed the character of Nolan, who was portrayed as a handsome and sweet chess prodigy.
However, while the book was a cute young adult romance with a chess-filled plot, there were a few areas that could have been improved. For instance, Mal's self-destructive tendencies seemed a bit similar to the miscommunication trope, which could have been frustrating for some readers. Additionally, some readers have opined that there was too much focus on chess, while the romance aspect could have been more spicy.
Overall, the book was a good read, with a few areas for improvement. It could have been more romance in it, so it was not my type of book. I look forward to reading more of her books, hopefully spicy next time.
