This was a delightful snippet of Check & Mate! I thought it wouldn't be my cup of tea because it seemed like a YA story with a very specific audience, but I was delightfully surprised to find myself drawn right in! I don't know much about chess, but you don't have to to feel the vibes of this tale. I loved the sass immediately portrayed by our main character, Mallory, and I like the way we are introduced to her family. And while the author could have given a very woe-is-me background for Mal, she makes you feel sympathetic for her while also being proud of her strength and sacrifice for her family. It's hard to describe, but Mal just comes across as totally badass in a lovable way!

This tidbit has me wanting to know more...to have more time with Mal and her "demon" sisters, to learn about Sawyer and what HIS story is, to see how thing story is going to unfold! Check mate, I surrender!!
