At the start of the story we get to know Mallory Greenleaf. Mallory played chess when she was younger, and she was very good at it. After the dead of her father, who also played chess, she quit.
Mallory blames herself that her dad left and died. During the story we see that Mallory wants to make up for things by taking care of her mother and sisters. Because of that Mallory starts to play chess again.
During her chess game she gets to know Nolan Swayer, the worldchampion.

I loved Mallory and Nolan. Both were very loveable characters, who matched very well. I found the book a fast read because i always wanted to know how the two characters developed to each other.
The writing was also very comfy. Loved the style!

Despite the genre being feelgood, there also was attention for Mallory her struggles. During the story Mallory learns to heal her past.
When i red the book i got a warm and lovely feeling. The cover of the book matched very well with the story and its vibe.

Conclusion: Check mate is another great book from Ali Hazelwood. I definitely recommend it, especially when you like cute, romantic stories.
