While I don't typically connect with young adult books anymore, Ali Hazelwood's writing and character development still sucked me right in.

This book is much slower-paced than Ali Hazelwood's adult novels, but still very engaging. Somehow, she had me invested in chess and the life of an 18-year-old who was taking on a parent role within her family.

In this enemies to lovers, he falls first, novel, Mal is a headstrong young adult with the weight of the world on her back. When she meets Nolan her life quickly changes and Mal learns that her life could be very different.

This book was easy to read and lose myself within. While it had the deck stacked against it for being something I would enjoy, I could not put it down and when I did I was eager to pick it back up. It had humor, trials and tribulations, and a female main character who was flawed but I couldn't help rooting for.

I would easily recommend this to young adults or older fans of Ali Hazelwood's books.
