This is classic Ali Hazelwood - if you know, you know! This is classified as a YA romance, but I think anyone who enjoys light, fun romancy beach reads will enjoy this and I would classify it as more of a contemporary romance. It’s the story of Mallory (who previously was a bit of a young chess phenom and quit due to the stress it was causing her family) who begrudgingly enters one last tournament and beats the hot, young chess “it” boy, Nolan. Of course this leads to an enemies to lovers type scenario and the rest, as they say, is history!

The writing flows well and is easy to read. The characters are like able and you find yourself rooting for them along the way. The book does mention a lot current trends for the “Gen Z” crowd - TikTok, BTS, Timothee Chalamet, Riverdale, etc. As an older millennial, I sometimes felt my age reading this book, but if you can get past that, you’ll probably enjoy it!
