I would like to start off by saying I’ve given every single Ali book 4 to 5+ stars. Love, Theoretically was her latest release which I reviewed back in Feb (through an ARC) and it was a five-star read. So I was excited to see her dabble in the YA genre, and from the gist of it I think she knocked it out of the park.

This book(based on the excerpt) is unashamedly gen z with a lot of pop culture references. I love reading about nerdy MMCs and I am huge sucker for coming-of-age romances. Also as someone who is a fan of the show “Queen’s Gambit” I know a chess romance is going to right up my alley. Rivals to Lovers is one of my favourite tropes ever so, I am excited to see how it plays out in “Check & Mate”! Can we also appreciate how beautiful and gripping the book cover is? Nolan already sounds whipped for Mallory. I now have a newfound appreciation for Chess LOL
