I am not usually someone who picks up a YA book, but Ali Hazelwood can do no wrong. Her writing is funny, witty, charming, and yet still makes you cry. The main characters are relatable even if you know NOTHING about chess (I know nothing about chess). I could not get enough of the banter in this book, I loved every page.
As someone who took care of her siblings I loved the narrative of Mallory because it wasn’t done in a way that makes you cringe, instead you actually feel for her and become invested in her story. I wasn’t sure about the MMC at first but quickly fell in love with his ability to read Mallory and their conversations had me cackling. There is still space without it pushing that line of YA, and you’re invested the entire time.
I will say though, Mallory’s younger sister has to be my favorite in the entire book. Need a book about her next please and thank you!
