I feel like this is a good setup of what's to come. It's been established that Mallory loved chess and was very good at it, but now we get to discover what happened exactly that caused her to stop. There are, of course, inferences, but I think it's something that will play out throughout the remainder of the book. I loved the small interaction we get between Mallory and Nolan, it really speaks to, hopefully, a good rivalry to come. Overall, very interested in seeing where the rest of this story goes.
