I won an advanced readers copy of Chain of Gold and was so excited for this book! I haven’t finished the Infernal Devices trilogy yet but I set that aside and started this one anyway. If you aren’t familiar with Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunter world, here is a bit of a breakdown. The first series she put out was The Mortal Instruments (6 books, City of Glass etc..), the second series was the Infernal Devices (3 books, The Clockwork Angel etc) which is a prequel to The Mortal Instruments. The 3rd set is the Dark Artifices (3 books, Lady Mignight etc) and that is a sequel to the Mortal Instruments. I like that even though Chain of gold is part of it’s own trilogy within this Shadowhunter series, you can still read it without needing to have read the others in order first. Chain of Gold is part of the Last Hour series (a new trilogy) and is a sequel series to the Infernal Devices but still a prequel series to The Mortal instruments. And if that was royally confusing, if you want to read them in timeline order, start with
The Infernal Devices trilogy
The Last Hours trilogy
The Mortal Instruments (6 books)
The Dark Artifices trilogy
*The Bane chronicles (not sure where in the timeline as I haven’t read it yet)
There’s just something about her writing, the storytelling, the flow, the visual descriptions, the character development, the pacing. This is definitely not “same story, different names, different year”. This is a whole new story, new generations, new adventures. Every book of hers that I pick up and start, has the same effect on me. I’m sucked in within the first 2 pages and read it straight through barely able to put it down. There are a few things here and there that are a little repetitive, lines like “he ran his fingers through his messy/tousled/straggled hair” and seemed to be quite a few references to the boys’ messy/tousled/hair but I guess it’s one of those attractive things about boys. There were also a few grammatical errors but my copy said that it was an UNEDITED copy so those things might not be there in the final version. Ultimately, the only thing that bums me out about this book is that I’m already finished with it and I have to wait that much longer for book #2. So if you are already a fan of the Shadowhunters series, GO BUY THIS BOOK and get acquainted with the new generation. If you’re new to the series, GO BUY THIS BOOK, it’s up to you which order you read the series.
