The Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare is everything I wanted and didn't realize I needed. Having been awhile since I read the Infernal Devices, I had grown to miss some of my favorite characters and was elated to see old friends. If you have been in a book hangover over the Infernal Devices for as long as I have, then you are definitely in for a treat. Cassandra has always been masterful when it comes to world building, and this novel is no different as you travel back into the world of Shadowhunters. It amazes me each time how Cassandra can keep building in the same world but make the series so intricate and different in their own ways. Another one of Cassandra's strengths is how relatable and lovable her characters are, which does not lack in the Chain of Gold. If anything, this can make the beginning hard to keep up with, as so many different characters are thrown at you at once. If you are new to Cassandra's writing, I do not recommend this to be the first book you start off with (but do what ya want), however I believe anyone can enjoy this book. I can say, I never thought something would make me more frustrated (in a good way) than Emma and Julian's situation in the Dark Artifacts, but Cordelia and James really stole the cake on that one. As experienced in her other series, don't expect to get what you want in the first book! That being said, I cannot wait for the rest of the series!
