First, a little bit of background: I've read at least 16 Shadowhunter books prior to this excerpt. I loved this excerpt, and I can't wait for this book to arrive in the mail. I ordered a finished copy in December 2018, so I'm so glad it's almost here.
The characters in the Chain of Gold series are almost new to us, although if you've read some of the companion novels you'd already be somewhat familiar with the characters. I was excited to see more of these characters.
Ms. Clare brings Edwardian London to life. I love how the characters feel so real, as do the settings. I can already tell, just from this first look, that there's going to be tension between James, Cordelia, and Grace; there's a mystery about why the demon activity has receded in London, and what's going to happen to Elias Carstairs?
I recommend you at least read The Infernal Devices (Clockwork Angel, etc.) before reading Chain of Gold, but you won't get lost if this is your first Shadowhunters novel either. The Shadowhunter universe is so complex (seriously, these are worldbuilding goals for any novelist) and you'll be reading one book and you'll know what the characters are talking about from another novel--your experience will be better if you read the other books first. However, this book will be amazing even if CoG is your first book by Cassandra Clare.
