I haven’t read the Mortal Instruments or any of its diverging series, but apparently you don’t need to have in order to read this first book in a new, related series. I’d say that’s mostly true, but probably much more fun for fans of Clare’s other work.

I think she writes pretty well. It’s that really descriptive YA fantasy style that is fairly popular. I just don’t care much for aristocratic English/European protagonists much at this point. The old-timey rituals and Victorian ‘societal’ roles seem so over played right now. I’m tired of white-centrism, classism and misogyny dressed up and romanticized as something desirable that needs to be emulated. Not Clare’s fault, but not something I’m interested in.

The cover is nice—not eye catching, but beautiful once you pause to study it.
