A new book by Cassandra Clare will catch the eye of anyone familiar with the other books in the Shadowhunter realm. Chain of Gold is a spin off from the Infernal Devices series. The main characters are children of characters introduced in the other series, mainly Tessa and Will Herondale. The first few pages let us know that something is off in Dickensian era London. Ten-year old Lucie Herondale goes wandering around the family estate, gets lost, fall in a hole and is rescued by a mysterious young man. The book skips ahead ten years to join her brother James and his friends as they battle a demon, the first they've had to fight in a long time. Of course he's handsome, intelligent and very likeable - trying to balance his new love for Cordelia, a family friend, with his roll as a Shadowhunter and his disturbing, spontaneous trips into the Shadow Realm - home of demons. Next we meet Cordelia who has moved to London to escape the trial of her father for mishandling events that caused the death of Shadowhunters and Downworlders (vampires, werewolves and fey) and almost destroyed the tenuous relationship between the two societies. And this is all in the first 35 pages!!!! I read the Mortal Instruments, but not the Infernal Devices, and I had no problem catching on and becoming intrigued with Lucie, James, Cordelia and the rest of the young Shadowhunters. I felt like part of the clan from the start. The cover art is striking and intriguing - it draws you in to the point where the book will open itself. I'm eager to read the rest of the book and I know we'll purchase it for our school library. Thank you for the First Look!!
