I found this first look incredibly enjoyable. While I have read some previous books from her Mortal Instruments series, I have not read all of Clare’s Infernal devices which I believe this series spins off of. It had all the necessary information I needed to understand who was in the scene and what was going on—it did have spoilers that would potentially ruin some of the suspense of the earlier series. I really liked how problems were introduced—the mysterious reason behind the arrival of the Carstairs, the shift into the shadow realm, etc—but also quickly explained so that while there was some suspense, it was clear that the overarching problem would be larger and more complex than these first few introductory issues. I really liked the way Clare has set up the Grace-James-Cordelia problem as well as her quick but strong initial characterizations of all the characters. I feel like the story itself is very exciting and will revolve around a larger problem that will focus on whatever is being hinted at when they discuss the sudden absence of demons in London. I will add that the cover is gorgeous and I like that it stays true to the first two series covers in style.
