This book is set in Beaufort, South Carolina, and narrated by Joey Green, son of Marshall and Carol. Joey had been visiting Beaufort since he was a small boy, when his grandparents owned the house his parents currently occupy. He is visiting them at this point because of his dad's illness, Lewy body Dementia, which he is surprised has progressed at such a rapid rate (the disease erases one's short term memory, and sharpens the longer term one). The story unveils this family's battle with the disease, and also the memories Marshall is having from his past, things previously not discussed with his son.

With current and past murders colliding, along with intermittent memory issues, family relationships dynamics, secrets from years ago, romance, caregiving for a loved one with Lewy Body Dementia, and racial biases, there is a lot of content to this story plot that keeps one trying to put all the pieces together about what happened in the past AND now.

This book is very well written and does a wonderful job of bringing numerous issues to the plot. Most will be able to relate to this in some way, to some degree or another (hopefully not murder!). I enjoyed the characters, who I thought were well developed and believable, and the way the family members compassionately cared for one another, especially Marshall. I enjoyed all the twist, big and small, that the author incorporated, especially the picture at the end which explained some events and wrapped up the story by tying it back to the title.
