To look after his ailing father, who is suffering from dementia, Joey Green returns to Beaufort, South Carolina to give his overworked mother a break. Joey's father, Marshall, has basically lost all of his short-term memory but his long-term memory seems to be keeping his oldest memories strong and vivid. Marshall's mind keeps taking him back in time, of growing up as a boy in Beaufort.

At first glance, this seems like to blessing, providing Marshall a refuge from his shrinking future. However, Joey becomes anxious when his father begins to have hallucinatory arguments with people from his past. Joey notices these hallucinations begin to hint at deadly secrets, scandals, and suspicions that have long been forgotten but could still have the power to destroy lives. Everything that Joey thought he knew is turned upside down, especially when police show up at his door about a current murder.

I was a little worried that this one was going to be more of a family drama than a mystery/thriller but I really enjoyed it. It definitely was slow at the beginning, but once things picked up, I couldn't put the book down.
