A couple of innocents from rural Georgia take their honeymoon to Cape May, NJ in the fall of 1957. Amid the empty summer homes of the resort community, the two young lovers are taken under wing by three of New York City’s upper class hot set. Thus begins the slow dance of seduction that will change the innocents forever and introduce them to infidelity and pain.

I remember a quote from an American Horror Story episode on TV: “The Devil is real. And he's not a little red man with horns and a tail. He can be beautiful.” That was Henry and Effie’s reality.

Though the plot was fresh and appealing to me and the writing was smooth and enjoyable, I found myself not being drawn in by any of the characters. Both Effie and Henry felt like stereotypes of a 1950’s couple from a rural community. Their slow seduction by the hip and rich couple from the big city did not hook me into the story well enough. Given the painfully slow setup of the story, the outcome was predicted and anticipated.

One historical error that may well have been picked up between this proof and the final edition was early on. Henry and Effie were said to have gone to church at the United Methodist Church. That denominational title did not exist until the merger in 1968. It would have been The Methodist Church.

Even though this book was given to me free in return for a fair and honest review, I am afraid I cannot recommend this book.
