Not what I expected, but interesting none the less!
A 1950's story of newlyweds on their honeymoon in Cape May, NJ. They are young, naive, and end up involved with a reckless group of people who change the trajectory of their marriage and lives forever.
This story was not as I expected. The first half of the book was lighthearted and fun then it made an unexpected turn into darkness and debauchery. I didn't enjoy the premise of adultery and lies.
The characters were interesting at first but the story was slow going. About two-thirds in, it changed rapidly and the rest evolved so quickly I feel that some character development suffered. There were hints at a larger storyline but certain feelings and character relationships were never expanded on.
Overall, I enjoyed the first half of the book, but it lost me when the characters seemed to lose all common sense and their knowledge of right and wrong.
Also, who from a small southern town in the 1950s can afford to take a month long honeymoon?! Parts of the story seemed unrealistic at times.
