I don’t know what intrigued me so much about this book but I was very excited to get a copy of it! It moves slowly at first, with newlyweds Henry and Effie, getting to know each other. Things get more exciting when they meet Max, Clara, and Alma. The sweet and simple relationship Henry and Effie have developed gets turned on its head as they are invited to join in with the partying of the neighbors. It isn’t long before their own relationship begins to crack from the drinking. I can’t say that a whole lot actually happens in this book- but at the same time- I couldn’t put it down. The setting is beautifully written and the characters are interesting, though annoying naive at times. The story follows Henry and, though you want to stop his from making mistakes, you really can’t blame him for some of his actions, stupid as they are.
