Cape May is the debut novel by author Chip Cheek. I received a physical arc of this book which I won from BookishFirst. I was not sure what to expect when I started reading, but was pleasantly surprised. It’s like no other book I’ve ever read before. If you are one that is turned off by reading stories with sexual scenes, and I mean a lot of them, then this book is not for you. It’s a story of a very young, newly married couple that travel from Georgia to Cape May, New Jersey for their honeymoon. They go there in September, not thinking that this is the off-season for this seaside resort town. The story starts off in the 1950’s and the setting is absolutely beautiful with the descriptions of the ocean and the summer homes. Although it’s pretty devoid of people, they do encounter 3 rich socialites and that’s where their troubles begin. The rest of the story goes into detail of how their honeymoon goes awry with all the drinking, partying, and sexual encounters. It depicts how marriages often go through troubled times with lust and affairs but somehow manage to survive and live through it. I really had a hard time putting this book down because I got so wrapped up in the storyline and with the characters. I’d like to thank BookishFirst, Celadon Books and author Chip Cheek for gifting me this early copy and allowing me the pleasure to read and review it. I’m giving it a 5 star rating!
