I loved how the author gave the reader a solid sense of Effie and Henry right from the beginning of the story. They are learning more about each other in the early days of their marriage, and at the same time, Effie is nostalgic for the childhood she experienced during summers in Cape May. When Henry and Effie stop at a house near the one they are staying in, Effie is greeted by an acquaintance from those childhood summers. From the first moments of this encounter, it is clear that she and Henry are not going to be comfortable with Clara’s crowd. Their decision to stay for dinner doesn’t appear to be wise. The strong character development and the setting pulled me into the story and I would love to find out what happens next.
