Just as Effie and Henry have gone into their honeymoon unawares of what they've gotten themselves into when they arrive to their honeymoon destination of New Hampshire, so does the reader know what lays around the corner when Clara, an old acquaintance of Effie's, runs into the couple and plants herself into their plans. Effie seems disinterested, Henry is enthralled, and at this point, the reader is particularly intrigued as to what is about to happen with this seemingly innocent pair.
