I immediately fell in love with the character, Mungo. He is thrilling, brave, and so in love with one of his father's slaves, Camilia. Mungo receives a letter from her while in England that his father has died and must come quick. His father treated his own slaves like a family and they were to be free once he passed on. This exactly wasn't the case when he showed up to his family's plantation. It was boarded up and taken by the bank, not a slave in sight. Camilia and one of the other slaves ran away and are hiding. The family's lawyer, Chester, caught Mungo breaking into the house and learned that Chester betrayed his father, made him so far in debt that he was never able to recover. The slaves were sold and Chester bought Mungo's fathers house. Mungo goes through several daring adventures to hold onto his own power and save his name. I loved this book from start to finish. I have not read anything else by this author but I will be purchasing the series this prequel goes with.
