This was my first introduction to Mungo St John and I honestly don't know whether I like or hate him as a character. The saying the road to hell is paved with good intentions should be his motto. I think the decisions he made especially in Africa stamped out any good that he had in his heart and he became a changed man. While the book definitely kept my attention it did seem to drag on a bit in the middle and lost me a bit when everything just seemed to keep working out in his favor. While it was a very eye opening book as to what the slave trade was like it was also very difficult to read the more graphic scenes. Overall I enjoyed the book but am not attached enough to the character of Mungo St John to read more about his journey.
