The 'Call of the Raven' captures the attention in the very beginning of the story. It commences with an interesting discussion on the topic of slavery.

Unlike the conventional take on slavery, the protagonist favors it and puts forward cogent points - "And what use is freedom, if it is only the freedom to live in a slum until you are worked to death?" And here we get to know that our hero is not going to be an all-good, boring one. And his fellow university-mate, Fairchild, has been set against him as a morally elevated young man. So, there are many shades when it comes to characterization.

The plot seems to be well-developed and the story maintains a good pace. And the picturesque quality makes the reading experience better.

The dialogues are witty. At one point, the protagonist gives a novel definition of slavery. "The power of the strong and wealthy over the weak and poor."

On the whole, it is an engaging read.
