Well-written, but didn't consistently keep my interest.

Even though this is a prequel, I definitely feel like prior knowledge (via reading other books that came first about this character/in this series) would be helpful. The writing style is very capable and flows well but I can sense that more profound and interesting elements of the story will take a lot of time to form.
