Cover: Burning plantation I kind of like it but at the same time I don't like the overall style. I think if I was walking around in a store I would not pick it up.

So I do not read synopsis so of course I missed that I was going to be reading during Black History Month about a slave owner we are supposed to have empathy for.
Right off the back I think that the author brought up some good points about how hypocritical "good" people back then talked about slavery (and racism and bigger conversations about social justice). You hate slavery but love sugar, cotton, and make your very living off of talking about ending slavery. All these people talking above African Americans without ever knowing or being around African Americans (not to say they had to see the horrors of slavery for themselves but there is some messiness to the whole civilly debating slavery). Nonetheless, the slave owner character did also present a lot of myths about slavery that we are still fighting to debunk (myths that make people say slavery was not that bad/overblown).
