Not usually my kind of read but funny how it coincides with my current read (Between the World and Me) which talks about racism and bodily harm especially to people of color in America.
This book unashamedly tackles the topic and the glimpse was a very brutal and sad start to the story. It sets the tone for what is to come and a perfect set up to how the MC would overcome this trial. I think the book has a all the right elements to a good story- a strong headed MC, a heartbreaking back story, a very hard obstacle to overcome and a forbidden romance.
