In 1994, Dolly Rawlins was released from prison and transported to the Grange to celebrate her release with a group of former prisoners. In the present, a fire has destroyed the Grange. Responders found not only a body, but the burned remains of money stolen in a train robbery from 1995. The case was never solved and the discovery has now re-opened the investigation.

Jack Warr is one of th detectives investigating the death. His adoptive father is battling cancer and passed Jack a folder with information about his true family. Jack is tied to the Rawlins family and becomes obsessed with finding his history as he discovers ties to the events in 1995. While his step-father provided a stable and loving environment, his birth father was aggressive and involved in criminal activities. Jack must reconcile the differences in these men and how they currently influence his decisions.

While this is a new series from Lynda La Plante, she ties it to the characters and events in her Widows series. Jack develops into a strong character whose return will be strongly anticipated in future entries in this series. I would like to thank Bookish First for providing this book or my review.
