Candice Iloh certainly has a way with dialog and dialect!! Break This House is about a sixteen year old girl called Minah who is just starting to come to terms with her mothers death, which she believes was due to cancer, a few months earlier. A surprising invitation reunited her with her maternal family members in her hometown of Obsidian. While at this party/memorial, she bonds with her twin sister and cousins, experiments a bit with alcohol and drugs, and discovers several family secrets, including her mothers actual cause of death.
The dialog is written in such a way that I could hear Minah and her family’s voices in my head as I read the book. The family secrets and dysfunction seem quite believable and relatable in a lot of families and ….I love a good mystery. Kudos to Candice Iloh for this book. I’m excited to read more from her!!
