Yaminah learns that not everything is what you think it is. She’s living in Brooklyn with her father after the two of them leave their hometown of Obsidian, Michigan. Minaj goes back because of family matters and quickly learns that her family and the town she grew up in aren’t necessarily what she remembers them being.
I thought this was a great coming-of-age story about a teenage girl. As we grow up, we learn truths about our families that we didn’t know (and may not even want to know), but we take them and we grow from them. I liked the writing style and how the book was broken into three different sections. The dialogue was very realistic and I can picture people actually talking and interacting the way the characters and do. I do think that it could have been longer. I know it’s a YA book, but maybe one more section could have helped Minah have even more growth. Overall, I thought it was a great read.
