The narrative voice in this book is so strong, Yaminah really comes to life and welcomes readers into her life experiences, good and bad. Iloh's writing paints a vivid picture of daily life for a teen in Brooklyn, figuring out who she is and how she wants to connect to her family and her past. As she reflects on her neighborhood and her identity, Yaminah is honest and funny.
The book doesn't shy away from tough topics - drug abuse, family estrangement, teenage love and sex - making it relatable for young adults who are also grappling with these challenges in daily life, forming their opinions and their own ways forward. The portrayals of grief, confusion, and resilience are compelling, and I read the entire book almost in one sitting.
I was happy to pass this copy on to the Little Free Library on my college campus, because I know some student is going to really enjoy Yaminah's story!
