The first few chapters of Break this House are not for the weak of heart. Death, disease, and family strife sit together uncomfortably at the table. That said, this seems like the type of book that many folks, especially those with complicated family relationships that have led to estrangement, would benefit from reading. As a reader outside of that realm but with a loved one who sits smack dab inside that reality, I can think of why this book might be off-putting to some readers and immensely valuable to others.

My biggest wondering is...are the paragraphs at the very end of each chapter pages out of Sandra's diary, or possibly a letter to her estranged daughter? My inner pacifist and "happy ending" loving heart wishes the latter to be true and that it might bring 16-year-old Yaminah some well-deserved answers, spiritual reckoning, and peace!
