The cover of this book immediately caught my eye, and the opening chapters reeled me right in! Break This House is an immersive experience. Readers are treated to detailed descriptions of the sights, sounds, tastes, and smells of life in Crown Heights and the whole of New York. The protagonist and narrator is observant, direct, and (as the preface promises) open about her emotional experiences, however intense. Underneath it all, there's a current of mystery, as we begin to glimpse the details of Yaminah's family background and something unpleasant afoot in her birthplace, Obsidian. Can't wait to read more.
