Body Language
Short stories offer brief snapshots of their characters' lives, but that doesn't mean they lack substance. A lot can be said with few words, especially when an author can inspire the reader to assimilate their own experiences. I'm a fan of the form and I can still remember the first short story collection I read some 20+ years ago.
Marylee MacDonald's Body Language is a collection of "twelve unforgettable portraits of heartbreak and desire." My favorites were Ink, All I Have, and the titular Body Language.
A common thread that ties these stories together is how assumptions can mask the truth of a person. How people can judge others based on their own experiences, and in these stories, those judgements are proven wrong every time.
