I enjoy La Plante's characters; they are definitely human with faults as well as good points. They don't shy away from saying what they think, sometimes without considering the consequences. Tennison seems to be down on her luck as far as her career goes. Her superiors in the new assignment don't seem to appreciate her persistence in pursuing small details. However, her tireless pursuit produces results. She shows her capabilities even though she causes herself trouble.

However, it seems to me that the author didn't want to leave one stone unturned by trying to include so many side details and side plots. It is a good read, but I have enjoyed the other Tennison books more.
